Sci-fi Horror Hallway

Game Environment

Project Description

A spine-chilling, atmospheric teaser video for a single-player sci-fi horror game

Our team of six students, we worked on this team project and our aim was to evoke a sense of dread and unease in the player.

With an aggressive timeline of just eight weeks, our mission was to bring to life a high-quality, realistic graphics style, encapsulating a hauntingly ominous ambiance.

As the project manager and Unreal layout artist, my responsibilities encompassed multifaceted roles.

I oversaw project timelines, coordinated team efforts, created the Unreal Engine level map, helped design some of the 3D assets, and assisted with the the video content and 2D decals to ensure a cohesive and high-quality project outcome.

As the Unreal Layout Artist, I spearheaded the creation of initial layout designs and compositions within the Unreal Engine. Particularly, I innovated a sophisticated texture system, leveraging PBR textures and using them with texture masks.

To achieve this, I delved into advanced Unreal tutorials, mastering techniques that culminated in a streamlined and efficient workflow. This approach, although relatively unexplored, helped with the following:

  • Consistency
    • The base material library with tiling materials can be reused for each asset.
  • Resolution
    • All titling textures can be 2K-4K. Keepign them at high resolution with keeping memory budget tight.
  • Speed
    • Don’t need to worry as much about matching the correct look and feel for assets getting textured as everything is already in the library and only need to create a mask.
    • Chanign the look and feel of materials can be done in seconds, no need to redo all the texturing work.
  • Performance
    • Each asset will now have only 1 or 2 unique textures (mask + optional custom normal)
