CG Title Sequence

Baffling Mysteries

Project Description

For this project, I did the 3D sculptures, models, textures, rigging, compositing, and editing.

As a personal interpretation of the Monomyth’s flying carpet concept, I created this title sequence and created a backstory that goes with it. Lily, our protagonist uncovers fantastical creatures that roam unseen by others..

First I researched and created various concepts for the type of creatures I can include.

Some commonly used and widely recognized mythical creatures that are generally in the public domain include dragons, unicorns, griffins, phoenixes, and mermaids.

These creatures have appeared in various cultures’ mythologies and folklore throughout history, making them accessible for creative use. However, it was essential to ensure that my interpretations and designs are original and unique. I decided on sea creatures at the end, with bright glowing textures.

Once I sculpted the whale in Nomad, I hopped over to Maya to fine-tune the low poly and fix the UVs. I textured the whale in Substance Painter with some custom textures.

Next, I brought the whole back into Maya and got that whale moving with some minimal animation. But the movement felt a bit lacking, so I went back in and smoothed it out, making it more smooth.

I then went ahead and set up a rig for both the whale and the jellyfish, followed by rendering the whole sequence and pulling everything together in Nuke for that final touch. I adjusted the glow of the whale’s skeleton until it hit just the right vibe.
